The unification of Nair tribes in the middle of the ninth century B.C. in the southern part of the Armenian plateau completed with the formation of the kingdom known as Urartu. Having strengthened its position over a short period, it became one of the mighty slave-owning states of the Ancient East. Under King Argishti I, who reigned in 786— 750, the Urarts conquered Ararat plain - an enormous territory spreading as far north as the lakes of Sevan and Chaldyr.

image-9 The fertile Ararat plain played an important role in the political and, especially, economic life of the Urarts who did much construction work there. They built not only small fortresses (Aragats), fortified cities (Argishtikhinili, Teishebaini), but also engineering and hydraulic installations connected with agriculture.

Dvin is situated on a hill where a settlement, turned into a fortress in the antique epoch, had existed since the third millenium B.C. In the reign of Khosrov II (330-338) Dvin became the capital, and since the middle of the fifth century till the middle of the 13th century it was a major trade, handicraft and cultural centre of Armenia known in the countries of Asia Minor and Europe.

dvin-12 Excavations revealed the layout of Dvin which followed the pattern of Armenia's ancient fortified settlements. Double town walls were fortified with large round towers, and the citadel had a moat around it.

Rebuilding a life in Armenia after fleeing Syrian conflict

For many Syrian Armenians who fled to Armenia, the desire to maintain some semblance of their previous social status determined the areas of the country where they live. Wealthier families rented nice homes in the center of Yeravan, the country’s capital. But their savings soon disappeared because of the lack of available steady jobs. In response, the Armenian government proposed building a luxury housing complex called “New Aleppo,” along with several other new housing quarters across the region. But the proposal soon came under fire, with complaints that the housing complex was geared towards the rich rather than being accessible for everyone. From May 2014, when this series was photographed, until now, the land where this proposed new housing was to be built has still seen no new development. Sheep roam freely in an open field around a skeletal structure of what will presumably be the new community.

The country is also calling on the millions of its citizens who live abroad to publish positive stories about the nation on the internet, hoping to influence foreign investors, as well as promote tourism. Armenia in global publicity drive

By Russell Padmore
Business reporter, BBC World Service

Where in the world is Armenia? It's a question that the country's President, Serzh Sargsyan, is hoping to get more people around the globe to answer correctly. He wants to mobilise the 10 million Armenians living abroad for a global internet publicity campaign to boost tourism and influence foreign investors. Entitled the One Armenian, One Article campaign the idea is to get expatriates to write positive stories about the country. President Sargsyan and others behind the publicity drive say their country needs a higher profile, because many people struggle to recall anything about the nation.
